So we walked to the riverbank and saw a structure resembling a pagoda above, and I said, "This is the Western Mountain." The guest was delighted and asked me to climb up. I was also pleased and climbed with him.
Upon reaching the top, it was suddenly bright and open, and my ears and eyes felt refreshed. Looking around, I saw nothing but mountains, and the Western Mountain stood out, as if it were my friend. From the left to the right of the Western Mountain, it was all stone. The taller ones reached dozens of feet, and the shorter ones were also several feet high. Their colors ranged from yellow to black, to gray, to green. Their textures varied from hard to brittle, from soft to rigid. Their sounds were from clear to muffled, from high to low. Their shapes were round, square, long, and short. They were named as "stone," "rock," "peak," or "ridge."
The guest said, "This is the beauty of the Western Mountain." I replied, "Indeed, indeed. The beauty of the Western Mountain cannot be described by me. For I have never traveled to the Western Mountain, yet I know its beauty. The beauty of the Western Mountain is not confined to the stones, water, trees, flowers, or birds of the mountain."
The guest asked, "Why haven't you traveled to the Western Mountain?" I said, "I travel to the Western Mountain, not to travel to the stones, water, trees, flowers, or birds of the mountain. I travel to the Western Mountain, I travel to my heart."
The guest said, "I have heard that the water of the Western Mountain is clear and deep, which can wash my hair. I have heard that the trees of the Western Mountain are beautiful and lush, which can provide shade for my house. I have heard that the flowers of the Western Mountain are fragrant and beautiful, which can entertain my eyes. I have heard that the birds of the Western Mountain sing and chirp, which can delight my ears. Why don't you travel to the Western Mountain?" I said, "I travel to the Western Mountain, I travel to my heart. Once my heart travels to the Western Mountain, then the stones, water, trees, flowers, and birds of the Western Mountain are all traveled by me."
